The Academy Program visits Essendon Football Club

Last Monday, DFS The Academy Program had the privilege to get a glimpse of an AFL footballer at Essendon’s new facility at Tullamarine.

21 members of The Academy Program received a guided tour behind the scenes at the True Value Solar Centre. They checked out where the likes of Jobe Watson, Brendan Goddard and David Zaharakis keep in prime condition for AFL football.
The tour included their new gymnasium, indoor basketball and playing field and the players change rooms.
After getting a taste of where the players relax and recover, it was time for a taste of what sort of work the pros do out on the training track.
Starting with a testing warm-up overseen by Bombers Strength and Conditioning Assistant Coach Des O’Sullivan, the boys were put through a series of drills that AFL players do through out their training week.
Tackling, defensive awareness, kicking and marking and other areas were explored through the hour and half long session.
Essendon VFL Assistant Coach and Development Coach Paul Corrigan lead the session which certainly lived up to what the Essendon coaches said before the session that boys would be tired and “buggered”.
Despite the hard work, everyone – players, coaches and parents – enjoyed the rare experience.
